HOW DO I BECOME A MISSIONARY?

Here are some basic suggestions for how you can begin your missionary journey.

Join others
  • Visit the Guidance section of Ask A Missionary
  • Watch the video testimonies at Preparing To Go
  • Tell your pastors, family, and significant others about your interest in mission and be open to their counsel.
  • Join a ministry of your home church, for spiritual growth and for ministry experience.
  • Go on a short-term mission trip sponsored by your church or a mission agency that you are interested in.
  • Enlist others who will lift you up in prayer and encourage you throughout this process.

Pray for missionaries and the unreached
  • Get to know individual missionaries personally. This would include receiving their newsletters, praying for them, and financially supporting their ministries.
  • Subscribe to the Global Prayer Digest
  • Pray for countries with the book Window on the World, Operation World, or Operation World online.
  • Pray through recent mission news
Preparing to Go?
  • Consider a Mission Training International workshop on language acquisition and entering a new culture, even for your children!
  • Find out what options to go are available to you—denominational mission structure, your local church (by itself or with a partner mission agency), or through an interdenominational mission agency. Ask your pastor what mission agencies are already connected to your local church.
  • Seek some general counsel at the Mission Agencies section of Ask a Missionary.
  • Read up on a few of the larger interdenominational agencies out there:
    Youth with a Mission
    Wycliffe Bible Translators
    Frontiers
    New Tribes Mission
    Pioneers
    OMF International
    Africa Inland Mission
    Mission Aviation Fellowship
